Enlisting

I’ve written a detailed guide into enlisting which I recommend you follow. This will guide you through getting an account and purchasing your game bundle

Starter Ship

The first decision you need to make is which ship is best for me. There are plenty of resources online to help you decide but for me a starter ship needs a couple of key attributes

  • Can be reclaimed quickly if destroyed #insurance
  • Can handle itself in combat #bounty_missions
  • Can carry at least three packages/boxes #box_missions

Basic concepts of the game including mission types are explained in other area’s of the site, which will help explain why these three points are so important.

Personally I started off with the RSI Aurora but had a hard time completing box missions (simple orientation missions which are a great place to learn the game) due to a lack of cargo hold so upgraded to the Avenger Titan . This was an excellent choice and I didn’t regret it. The Titan is good to look at, has a dedicated cargo hold with rear access and can handle itself in combat. I’d defo recommend this ship.

With version 3.17.2 the Mustang Alpha makes a great starter too since RSI have added a dedicated storage location. 3.17.2 will likely land at some point in July 2022

Further update

With version 3.17.4 RSI introduced the Drake Cutter which is an excellent starter ship. This would 100% have been my preferred starter had it been available when I started playing. I love Drake ships and the Cutless Black (not considered a starter ship) is my current go-to for most things. To me the Cutter is a mini Cutless Black (but with more polish!)

Install the game

The only tip that seems particularly relevant here is ensuring you install the game on a SSD rather than a HDD. I have also heard people refer to having 32Gb of RAM if possible along with decent overall PC specs. One resource I did find useful was the Star Citizen Public Telemetry which shows where your PC stacks up vs other people and provides a good view of the types of framerates you will get. Uou do need to play the game for a bit before RSI can gather the data from your machine.

Starting the game for the first time

When starting the game you will need to choose a starter planet. There are a few to choose from but for new players most people, including myself, would recommend New Babbage on the planet microTech. New Babbage is a good choice as its a really good looking planet, has interesting atmosphere (although its pretty snowy) and a range of missions. The first missions I recommend are the Box Missions since they are pretty easy to do, allow you to visit a range of locations and practice the core ship mechanics such as take off, landing, navigation, atmosphere vs space flight, etc.
